RESUMO

Pelleted feeds (PF) are popular in horse nutrition because of high palatability and improved feeding hygiene, but ingestion is faster for PF than for cereals or muesli feed. The aim of the study was to evaluate whether variable amounts of two PFs produced with different physical properties from the same batch of feed can affect feed intake patterns in horses. Chewing patterns were measured in six warmblood mares (519 ±â€¯36.3 kg) on two PFs (small-sized PF1: ø 5 mm, length 21.9 ±â€¯4.97 mm, large-sized PF2: edge length 15.6 ±â€¯0.14 × 15.6 ±â€¯0.08 mm, length 54.4 ±â€¯9.59 mm) in three different amounts (1.0, 1.5, 2.0 kg) once per day additional to hay. PF 2 was ingested faster than PF1 for the meal size 1.0 kg, but PF 1 was ingested more rapidly with a reduced chewing intensity if the offered meal size increased. The ingestion of PF 2 tendentially elevated the chewing intensity at higher meal sizes. An additional, but inverted meal size effect compared to 1.0 kg, was observed for 1.5 kg, where PF 1 was ingested at a higher speed combined with a lower chewing intensity compared to PF 2. Independent from the offered amount, PF 2 induced a markedly increased saliva production combined with a higher daily water intake. Larger-sized pellets seem to intensify the chewing process and decelerate the ingestion time if the meal size becomes larger.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Tissue expanders lead to changes in the underlying bone and can cause bone resorption. We investigated whether the insertion of mechanical devices that distribute the load on the bone can influence these effects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 28 Lewis rats were assigned to 1 of 4 groups. Hydrogel expanders were placed subcutaneously either directly on the calvaria, on titanium mesh, or on a titanium plate. The fourth group of rats served as the controls. The bone quality and thickness were assessed beneath, and at the periphery of, the expanders using micro-computed tomography and histologic examination. RESULTS: Micro-computed tomography images were obtained before and 21 days after insertion. The images revealed a significant decrease in hydroxyapatite density beneath the expanders in the group with only expanders. This decrease was reduced with the use of titanium mesh and completely prevented with the use of titanium plates. Histologic examination revealed a significant decrease in bone density and marked lacunae beneath the hydrogel expanders in the group with only expanders. In contrast, the titanium mesh decreased the size of the lacunae, and the titanium plates completely prevented both the formation of lacunae and the decrease in bone thickness. CONCLUSION: The bone resorption caused by hydrogel expanders can be diminished using titanium mesh and completely prevented by the insertion of a titanium plate.

RESUMO

The importance of androgen signaling is well recognized for numerous aspects of central nervous system (CNS) function, ranging from sex-specific organization of neuroendocrine and behavioral circuits to adaptive capacity, resistance and repair. Nonetheless, concepts for the therapeutic use of androgens in neurological and mental disorders are far from being established. This review outlines some critical issues which interfere with decisions on the suitability of androgens as therapeutic agents for CNS conditions. Among these, sex-specific organization of neural substrates and resulting differential responsiveness to endogenous gonadal steroids, convergence of steroid hormone actions on common molecular targets, co-presence of different sex steroid receptors in target neuronal populations, and in situ biotransformation of natural androgens apparently pose the principal obstacles for the characterization of specific neurotropic effects of androgens. Additional important, albeit less explored aspects consist in insufficient knowledge about molecular targets in the CNS which are under exclusive or predominant androgen control. Own experimental data illustrate the variability of pharmacological effects of natural and synthetic androgens on CNS functions of adaptive relevance, such as sexual behavior, anxiety and endocrine responsiveness to stress. Finally, we present results from an analysis of the consequences of aging for the rat brain transcriptome and examination of the influence of androgens on differentially expressed genes with presumable significance in neuropathology.
